A number of years ago my dad was involved in an industrial accident which resulted in his death. Being only six months old in Christ, with no foundational teaching, I became angry with God and walked away. So I can relate to Peter, who gave his life whole heartily to Jesus (Luke 5:10-11), and followed Christ closely for three years; he was even one of three, of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples. Jesus had predicted that Peter would deny Him three times the night the guards came to the Garden of Gethsemane and took Him into custody (Matt. 26: 33-34) . And, as Jesus had said so it was, Peter denied his Lord three times that night. Once he realized what he had done, he left weeping bitterly (Matt. 26: 69-75). I can almost hear as the enemy whispers in Peter’s ear, “Look at you, and you call yourself a disciple of the Christ. You denied your Lord; He will have nothing more to do with you. And besides He’s dead now anyway.” I can imagine Peter feeling discouraged and hopeless. BUT when Jesus rose three days later He sent word to tell of the good news, and specifically asked for Peter to be told (Mark 16:6-7), later Jesus reinstated Peter (John 21:15-19). In addition, Peter went on to be a significant leader in the early church (Acts chapters 1-5 also see the books of 1st and 2nd Peter).
I too denied my Lord. However, once we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior we are His. When we become discouraged and turn to the world for comfort, the Lord is right there longing for us to come back. One passage that is a comfort to me is Rom. 8: 35-39. Knowing that no matter what I do or where I go, Christ’s love remains the same; absolutely nothing can change His love for me. For this I am truly grateful.
Therefore, no matter where you are in your spiritual walk, have peace in knowing that as He restored Peter, and me, He will do for you, because you are His, He loves you.
Have a triumphant day in Jesus!
April
